Chives Adding A Unique Touch To Veggie Dishes

In the plant-based cooking, some food ingredients take on the star roles of dishes. Other ingredients play supporting roles silently enriching each dish’s layers. Among these supporters, a spice often overlooked is the chive. Known also as “chives,” these are slender, hollow green stalks without the white base typical of other onions. Though not as eye-catching as other onions or garlic, chives are an excellent addition to recipes.

Chives lean towards a fruity flavor, milder than the spicy taste of other onion types. Thus, it is recommended to add chives in the last few minutes of cooking to preserve their original aroma and taste. Alternatively, you can add after the dishes are ready. Whether chopped fresh for direct consumption or as a decorative garnish, chives are a popular choice.

How to select chives

When choosing fresh chives, you should look for those with fresh green colour and a fresh scent. The size is suggested to be around six inches long. If you see any signs of wilting, yellowing, or drying, it is suggested to give them up.

Tips for storing chives

To keep chives fresh, it is suggested to wrap it with a piece of damp paper. Alternatively you can store them in a sealed bag or container in the refrigerator, where they can last for 2 to 3 weeks.
