KiKi Typhoon Shelter Noodles (Vegan)

This time, we like to try KiKi Typhoon Shelter Noodles, a Taiwanese brand but inspired by Hong Kong’s famous “Typhoon Shelter” flavour. Traditionally, this flavour comes from fishermen cooking on boats in Hong Kong, using crispy fried garlic and chilli to create that aromatic, spicy kick. But how does this vegan version hold up? Let’s see!

What’s inside?

Each pack comes with four seasoning packets, including dried veggies, soy sauce mix, spicy chilli oil and crispy fried garlic.

The crispy fried garlic is the star of the noodle show. It adds a nice aroma. The dried vegetable can make the dish more freshness and beautiful generally. The soy sauce mix is made with soy sauce, soybean oil, garlic, chilli powder, rosemary, vegan oyster sauce, and salt. The taste is average without any surprise. However, the spicy chilli oil is little disappointed. It describes itself numbing and spicy, but it is not.

Spicy? numbing? or just… mild?

The chilli oil does give a light spicy kick, but if you love the feeling of numbing spice, you might be a bit disappointed. The “numbing” sensation is almost nonexistent, which is a letdown since it’s advertised on the packaging. However, if you prefer just a tiny bit of spice without the numbing effect, this might be perfect for you!

Taste & texture – decent

The crispy garlic adds a nice savoury aroma, and the sauce has a balance of salty and umami flavours. The noodles have a chewy texture, and overall, the taste is on the average.

Price? Pretty expensive

This noodle costs 120% more than similar instant dry noodles. Sure, it comes in a fancy box packaging instead of a plastic bag, but does that justify the price? Maybe not.

Hazel B’s rating – 6.5/10

Rating: 6.5 out of 10.

It has a great packaging. The pack of crispy garlic adds nice flavour. it makes itself as one of selling points. It is mild spice for those who don’t like it too hot. However, the numbing effect is missing. Above all, it is quite expensive relatively.

Would I buy it again? Probably not. It’s worth trying once, but for the price, I’d rather go for something with more value or better taste.
